Hollow

“Hollow” is a solo berimbau piece that begins with an improvised solo cadenza. Jeff Herriott’s signature electroacoustic sound, which he describes as “sonic velvet,” was developed for this piece by lopping off the attack of pre-recorded berimbau playing. To make a berimbau solo work inside of this aesthetic, Herriott reintroduces “showers” of berimbau attacks at different pitch levels at various points throughout the texture, offering a wonderful harmonic cloud within which the soloist playfully and subtly submerges and emerges. – Gregory Beyer
