Mkhulu Bhemani Magagula (? – 2019)

Mkhulu Bhemani Magagula (b. ? – 2019) was involved in making music since he was a young boy. Whether he was organizing a local Sibhaca dance group or learning to forge sitolotolo (mouthharps) by hand from his uncles, Magagula always made music a central part of his life. The whole of eSwatini listened to his makhoyane playing when he brung in the national news bulletins on national radio, and his distinctive voice and makhoyane sound was held up by all as the best in the country. Magagula played and made makhoyane and sitolotolo, but also sang and played infiliji (harmonica) and inkhositina (concertina).

Until his passing, Mkhulu Bhemani performed in a vibrant ensemble of traditional eSwatini musicians called Bashayi Bengoma. His ensemble misses and reveres him.
