In an improvisation session one evening in the presence of Christopher Mrofcza, the theme of this melody came into the world. That improvisation was fortunately captured on video and in a subsequent listening, I took the time to develop the idea. The systematic way that rhythmic density increases between D and F is meant to imitate the Bach solo sonatas and partitas where repetition of a single idea within a measure of music is deliberate and conscious.

The singing and whistling are subtle recollections of the musical bow’s past lives. Singing features prominently in the musical tradition of capoeira and the whistling is meant to invoke the pursuit of overtone driven melodies found in South African bow music traditions.
